Chippokes Plantation presents Monarchs on the Move with Joni Carlson (Surry County, Va.) — Saturday, October 12 from 2 to 4 p.m., park guests can get up close and personal with one of our most popular butterfly species! Historic Rivers Virginia Master Naturalist and butterfly enthusiast Joni Carlson will discuss and demonstrate butterfly tagging using monarchs she raises at her Monarch Butterfly Waystation in Surry County. In this seminar, participants will learn about the amazing characteristics of butterflies and their needs as they prepare for overwintering; wild Monarch Butterflies begin a treacherous migration southward in the fall. Following a brief lecture, guests will go on a guided hike to find these fluttering flower lovers and their fall nectar nourishments! Meet in the Quayle Classroom at the Farm and Forestry Museum. We recommend participants wear sunscreen and bring water.
